Food: It’s not just a matter of price.

We are consumed by the cost of things but not always concerned with what they are. As of today; November 5, 2021 food prices have risen to a height we haven’t seen in over a decade. It’s not just the cost of food but what we eat. We are all time deprived and look for quick solutions. Processed “foods”, quick heat and eat meals; we all make these choices.

It’s not merely the time it takes to cook a meal but the planning. We must plan what the meal is going to be and then take the time to shop and prepare it. Hunger says, take care of me now. So we look for the quick solution. Large food chains and restaurants are happy to accommodate. It’s supply and demand, not to mention they make a good bit of money in the process. If there wasn’t a profit motive they wouldn’t do it.

Anyone hungry yet? One well known chain will sell you a breakfast sandwich with sausage and cheese for a dollar fifty. If you want an egg with that sandwich it’s another dollar fifty. You can generally buy a dozen eggs for a dollar fifty. What they are selling is convenience and time. Five minutes in the drive thru and we are gone. I say this all the time; “four hours from now you will be hungry”. Food is the most important commodity on the planet and as long as we have something to eat, the least considered. Without food to calm our hunger we become angry and impatient.

What is the solution you ask. Firstly we must recognize that there are plenty of alternatives. Most of our food prejudice is based on foods that were not properly prepared so we don’t eat them. Given that it is difficult to find food that has not been processed or contaminated somehow we can at least stay away from those foods that require a chemistry degree to read the ingredients. Best if you can grow your own but I realize that is not always an option.

The first step is to plan, slow down, and cook. Lifestyle changes are not easy and our eating habits are no different. Only you can take the steps to a new dietary plan. Start slowly, plan and adapt. It won’t happen overnight. Start with one meal a week and then more frequently as you progress. It’s your health and your budget.
